10 Days with Jesus – Day 10

by | Apr 16, 2017

They Followed.
They Trusted.
They Believed.

But not anymore.  Now they were hiding behind locked doors.  Words had been said.
Tempers had flared.  Belief had been lost.  The whole message of Jesus died with Jesus.

Or so they thought . . .

This was the night they
would see the Promise.

This was the night they
would believe the Promise.

This was the night they
would RECEIVE the Promise.

This was the night that JESUS –
the promised and resurrected Son of God
would make them 3 Promises.

10 Days with Jesus
is about one TRUTH.

Jesus is LIFE.

Sunday Night. (behind locked doors)

This was the worst weekend ever.  The disciples had watched their Master be mocked, beaten, crucified, and buried in a borrowed tomb.  The dust hadn’t even settled yet on the betrayal of Judas, the midnight trials, the shouting mob, and the dying Messiah.  Things were dark.  Spirits were low.  The Doors were locked.

But Jesus wasn’t DEAD.
He was ALIVE.
And he was HERE.

Let’s See . . .

John 20

19  That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because
they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.  Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them!

He said, “Peace be with you.  20  As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side.  They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!

21  Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

22  Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Jesus was HERE.
And he had a WORD.
Actually he had 3 PROMISES.

3 Promises of Jesus.

Promise #1 – “I am WITH you.”

“Peace be with you” literally means
Peace is
joining you.”

The greek word for Peace is the verb
(eiro) which means “to join.”

He joined them.  He didn’t reprimand them.  Or punish them.  He joined them . . . right in the middle of their fear, their shame, and their doubt.  He came to mend their hearts and lift their spirits.  He came to set the captive free and they were filled with joy because Peace was with them.

Jesus WITH YOU – gives you the . . .

  • The power of Jesus.
  • The patience of Jesus.
  • The peace of Jesus.
  • The person of Jesus.

Promise #2 – “I am SENDING you.”

As the Father has sent me,
so I am sending you

The greek word for Sending
is the verb (apostello)
which means “set apart or called out.”

The mission of Jesus isn’t about VOCATION it’s about LOCATION.

Jesus called them to follow
but now they were hiding.

He was sending them on mission
even after their mistakes.

Jesus was sending them out
as a way of inviting them back in.

Promise #3 – “I am FILLING you.”

Then Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

The greek word for Receive is the verb
(lambano) which means “to receive

The greek word for Spirit is the noun
(pneuma) which mean “to fill with breath

Jesus was FILLING the disciples with his Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will . . .

  • Comfort you.
  • Strengthen you.
  • Guide you.
  • Change you.

God gave us the gift of Jesus.
Jesus gave us the gift of the Spirit.
The Spirit gives us the gift of LIFE.

Are you full of God’s Spirit?
It’s already been given.
It’s yours to RECEIVE.

Jesus said in John 11:35 . . .
“I am the resurrection and the LIFE.
Anyone who believes in me will LIVE.”

Jesus is LIFE.

  1. Mark Lehman

    J. – the lesson of Day 10 was a very nice way to bring home your 10 day Easter message in simple and profound terms. So often Easter messages focus on the events leading up to the Reserection and not on people’s thoughts and fears. Great job addressing the human feelings of Easter.

  2. Milo Hamilton

    Paul wrote
I consider my life of no value. My only aim is to complete the race and finish the task that Jesus gave us: the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
